Foundations that Beat the Summer Heat

Summertime is here and with it comes the blistering heat, so you know it’s time to update your beauty bag when your foundation resembles something like the hit of Simon & Garfunkel “slip sliding away”. Staying fresh and on point with your base is paramount. Whether you’re a minimalist or a glamazon acing your base is like the quest for the Holy Grail in the makeup bible. Every bride knows that her foundation must beat the heat for her day to go just right! No room for errors on your wedding day. No second chances to get it right. Over 25 years, I have worked with some winners and some losers; I have worked brutally hot sets with enough wattage to light up an NFL stadium! Models need to be heat proof and flawless. Your wedding day is no exception. Check out my ace of bases to beat the heat for your wedding day!

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

  1. KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE! Not every skin is the same therefore not all suggestions are for you! Those who are oily will need and extra dry base. Those who are drier will be great with a little moisture. Know your skin type and you are 90% there.
  2. Skin priming is important. I am quite obsessed with Peter Thomas Roths Anti Shine Mattifying Gel. This works great on all skins. You can even use this over your base to mattify your makeup instead of using powder to matte your makeup down. This will stop you looking too powdery if you are a drier skin. Neutrogena Shine Control Primer is a great drug store product that works a treat also. Combination or Dry skin look no further than Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer (obsession) It’s quite literally EVERYTHING!
  3. PRO TIP Have you heard of Philips Milk of Magnesia (YES! The laxative!) This is great to stop any oil or sweat on set. Armpits or your face; anywhere that gets oily or sweaty! I only apply a VERY light layer on the face or just on the oil prone areas. If you look white and chalky- you applied too much. Less is more with this product.
  4. Application-less is more! The thicker the product the more issues you will have with slickness and patchiness. Apply lightly to the areas that need coverage with a beauty blender.

ACE OF BASES TO BEAT THE HEAT (Apply with a Beauty Blender for a light coverage)

OILY SKIN- Make sure your base is oil free and long wearing and water based. Try Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Stay in Place Makeup or Mac Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation.

COMBINATION SKIN- Look for an oil free base and long wearing and water based. The difference is in the application. Apply a sheer application on your T-Zone and you can add a touch more on your drier areas. Again preparation of your skin is key. Try a cushion makeup like Laneige or Koh Gen Do Moisture Foundation which is my favourite; worth every cent.

DRY SKIN- Look for a hydrating base which will not settle in fine lines and look cakey and dry. My favourite for dry skins is Mac Face and Body hands down. It’s subtle, light, buildable and easy to apply; leaving a luminous look. Also try the Korean cult cushion makeup Sulwhasoo; it looks luminous and light and touch ups are so easy!
